What do you think the benefits of using Word and PowerPoint are? Try to give example(s) to support what you mean, where possible.

Liudmila, I think benefits of using Word and Power Point are great. Students are motivated by the ability to create individually. They always try to find new ways of design. Then their results depend on the objectives they define themselves. They find new material, new sites which is a good way of interaction and communication. They enjoy making presentations because it helps everybody not to be poor but excellent

Presentation software, such as PowerPoint, increases our capacity to present visual material (words, graphics, pictures) in a dynamic and interesting way. This software also offers a very interesting option where we can mix text and visuals with audio/video tracks so that pictures can dissolve or fly onto and off the screen, and music, speech and film can be integrated into the presentation. As a result, some of the advantages of it are the following – Power Point is fun to watch and it is fun to make as it is easy to create. I'd like to draw your attention to the fact that the teacher can focus on the classroom rather than spending time writing on a board. Moreover, it's perfect to visual learners and helps students take accurate notes. If it's used correctly it can accommodate all learners' needs. No doubt, it motivates students. It has a spell-check function (that is something what our blackboards lack!) I am sure this list of advantages is not complete and it can be continued. PowerPoint helps greatly at the lesson but it doesn’t mean that the lesson will always be a success. The matter is how we use it and how we integrate it into the lesson.

I would say using Word and Power Point is the most popular with my students and the teachers in my school. I prepare numerous handouts to teach vocabulary, grammmar, speaking and writing. My students are keen on making presentations and their creativity seems to be endless. I find PP very beneficial as it gives a chance to every student to contribute to the fulfilment of the given task if it is given to a group.

The benefits of using Word and Power Point cannot be denied. You came to increase studying efficiency. Use of visual aids has always been more fruitful and impressive. The material you are introducing can be enhanced by video, audio or animation. As you create or accumulate the material, you soon have a whole library of supplementary recourses, which is always there at your fingertips. You draw your students attention not by merely writing with your marker on a white-board, but using latest technologies, boosting students' motivation and concentration.

We live in the world of technology and as we've learnt from Cyberbullying section, there is a generation digital divide between children and "parents". The students demand technologically integrated lesson because their minds are stuffed with computergames, visual/audio movie effects and provoking adverts. It's difficult to motivate especially the secondary and higher ones to sit still and be attentive/active for 45 min. PPT gives the teacher a chance to use the language most of the students understand: technology. Here is the summary of benefits given from the site I've found recently:
1. Interaction and Engagement. PowerPoint hold students' attention through the use of video, graphics and music. They help the teacher to increase student involvement and interaction. I totally agree with Myroslava this point concerns more visual and auditory learners and be very helpful in teaching them.
2. Ability to Capitalize on Modern Media. PPT gives the teacher the ability to integrate authentic texts, videos, audio and photos from the Internet easily, and allows the teacher to share the most recent information using media that engage students. From my own experience I must admit it's the best way for students to present their creativity and get the recognition from the people their age publishing their works in educational social network round the world.
3. Integration of Multiple Sources. Using PowerPoint the teacher can integrate multiple sources in classroom presentations. For example, texts, videos, audio and photos can iclude the events from students' lives or anything they are interested in.
4. Availability of Instruction. PPT when published in educational networks can be seen as many times as the students want. It's essential with students who can't learn quickly at the classroom but need time to reflect at home. It's also important for absent or home-educated students.
5. Cooperation and Collaboration. Teachers can share lessons and presentations simply using a file-sharing system or flash drive. It sometimes saves teachers' time for preparation.

The benefits using PP are great. Especially when you work with primary pupils. That's fun. You can present the information in a different way, for example the new words. When you teach without PP you just show a picture, name it, maybe make a sound that the character on the picture does. With PP the pictures can move, you can use the real sounds of the characters. So simply the lesson becomes more interesting.

Nataly,
thanks for so detailed info. One more benefit about PP:
-- when students prepare PP presentation then stick to the rule about number of lines and words in each line on a slide. Then during presentation they practise their speaking, explain the ideas and provide more info about graphics or diagrams.

As for me, the main benefit of using Office applications is the opportunity to acquire essential skills when the stakes are not very high. Making presentations is a crucial skill in many professions at different levels of career ladder. Doing that while learning a foreign language creates multiple opportunities to collaborate in groups, then to compare one's skills with those of peers and finally to learn something new (or to share one's experince with the rest). Adults often suffer from lack of time, peer pressure, etc. which pretty often results in poor quality of presentations.

As for me I use Words for most of my lesson - I type, create, copy and print flash cards, individual cards, tests, texts, tasks...
Using Power Point really varies my lessons and makes them interesting for pupils. It improves our creativity - my students' and mine.
